Kolkata-based filmmaker enlightens many

The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya organised another chapter of museum’s popular series, Museum Popular lecture on Monday, where Kolkata-based filmmaker Sajal Samadder spoke on ‘Aesthetic in Anthropological Films’. Samadder commenced his lecture with explaining his transformation from an ad-commercial filmmaker to a documentary filmmaker. He shared his experience of three-year-long research of Toto tribe of Bengal for his first anthropological documentary. He informed that it was his childhood dream to become a filmmaker and for that he acquired skills in various genres starting from music to art direction of feature films.

While concluding his lecture, Samadder said, “Upcoming documentary filmmakers should ensure that while making an informative film they are not missing the extremely important part of films- its aesthetic”. Prof Sarit Kumar Choudhuri (Director, IGRMS) congratulated Samadder for making a documentary on a difficult subject like Anthropology. On this occasion, academicians like Debasis Debnath (Professor, IIFM), Prof Savita Raje (Professor, SPA) and Arun Kumar Shrivastava (Joint Director, IGRMS) attended the lecture. The programme was coordinated by Surya Kumar Pandey (Assistant Keeper) and HBS Parihar (OIC, Cine-Video) delivered the vote of thanks.

Sajal Samadder, is country’s one of the veteran painter and well researched filmmakers. With his hard work, experience and research for subject-based and informative films, he has established himself in the film world. Samadder as an independent filmmaker is member of panel of government’s various institutions. He has directed documentary films like Tribes of Bengal, lepchas of Bengal, Homeland of Kuduk, Hidden treasure of limbu and the magical painter, Jadopatiya and other anthropological documentaries. Presently, he is working on a feature-film based on poetry of Rabindranath Tagore and a 35 mm Bengali feature film ‘Bhaloveshe dekho ekbaar’.

Sangrahalaya under its popular educational series of Do and learn Education Programme is commenced an eight-day training programme on ‘Glass painting of Mysore’ from Monday. In this workshop, the artist Chanrika Padmanath is imparting training of popular glass paintings of Mysore to trainees at the museum guest house. On the day one, 60 students registered for the workshop.
