Forensic lab yet to be operational in Odisha city

Tuesday, 20 January 2015 | KSHIRABDHI TANAYA | KENDRAPADA

Keeping in view the importance of curbing law and order situation in the district here, the State Government has decided to open District Forensic Scientific laboratory (DFSl) in Kendrapara. A building was constructed near the SDPO office for opening of the DFSl unit. The building was inaugurated by the then SP of Kendrapara, Sanjay Kumar on August 30, 2001.

But, ironically, since the building was inaugurated as the District Forensic Scientific laboratory, not a single day the office was operated in the building, alleged intellectual masses. The building is now in dilapidated state and cracks have appeared in the walls. Most of the time, the building was used for keeping chairs and other unnecessary things of the police department.  Though a sniffer dog was provided to the district and fingerprint Sub- Inspector was entrusted, but the sniffer dog died a couple of years back and the police department has not allotted another sniffer dog yet. Only, the fingerprint Sub-Inspector is working in the district.

In order to conduct more inquiry and to ascertain the criminals in a crime, the district police have to depend on the State Forensic Scientific lab at Bhubaneswar for sending incriminating articles, exhibit, PB hair, blood sample, viscera and other things. Whereas the district police took the help of sniffer dog squad from the Crime Branch, most of the time, it has been witnessed that due to lack of forensic lab and sniffer dog squad, evidences were tampered on the spot as the team reached late. So most of the time, police failed to identify the criminals and act in time to arrest them.

When contacted, Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar Gajavhiye stated that he has written a letter to the police headquarters to provide a scientific officer, photo ASI, dog handler and attendant along with a sniffer dog and a mobile forensic unit van for making the DFSl operational. The district police department is going to recruit as many as 150 constables, including 82 constables for marine police stations, to strengthen the police stations, informed Gajavhiye.
