Durga Puja celebrated at Hazaribagh jail with fervour

Tuesday, 20 October 2015 | PNS | Ranchi

Durga Puja is celebrated with full fervour at Jai Prakash Central Jail in Hazaribagh by raising an idol of Maa Durga inside the premises for more than 50 years. The jail inmates also observe fasting during Navratra with a grand feast on Navmi to conclude the festive season.

“We have been celebrating Durga Puja here in the jail premises for the last several years which were started long back during the British period. Since then, we have been celebrating this festival regularly,” said Jail Superintendent of JP Narayan Central Jail Hazaribagh.

According to the Jail Superintendent, most of the jail inmates observe fasting consuming only fruits during the Navratra for which adequate arrangement is done by the jail administration.

“A full-fledged Durga Puja is celebrated by raising a huge idol of Maa Durga inside the jail premises performing all rituals during Navratra. Some even prefer ‘kalash’ worship inside their wards, which is also welcomed by us,” she said.
