'Rape' case: DGP expects Sangwan to court arrest soon

Tuesday, 01 July 2014 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In connection with the alleged rape of a woman by Pradeep Sangwan, a Haryana (Sonipat) native and son of ex-MP Kishan Singh Sangwan, State Director General of Police (DGP) BS Sidhu said,”We are taking legal advice to attach Sangwan’s property in Sahastradhara, Dehradun.”

Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) members raided and attached Pradeep Sangwan’s property at Sonipat, Haryana as he has been absconding since Sunday. Before conducting raids, the SIT had procured order for attachment of Sangwan’s property in Sonipat, Haryana from Dehradun CJM court recently.

In regard to this case, as per Supreme Court’s earlier directions, Sangwan was cooperating with the SIT. Sidhu expressed hope that after the Supreme Court’s refusal to give further stay on his arrest, Sangwan may court arrest soon. However, the SIT will continue the search for Sangwan until he is arrested.

According to official sources, the Supreme Court had directed Pradeep Sangwan to provide a white mobile phone to the Dehradun Police by June 27. The woman complainant, who has been accused of blackmailing Sangwan, had disclosed to the police during interrogation that Sangwan made a video clip of her using his white mobile phone. However, Sangwan had damaged this mobile phone and submitted it to the SIT in a damaged state.

It will be recalled that after the Uttarakhand High Court rejected his bail application, Pradeep Sangwan had approached the Supreme Court seeking exemption from arrest by the police for alleged rape but Supreme Court recently refused to give further stay for his police arrest.

Moreover, Sangwan’s brother-in-law Ajay Mann, who knew the victim and had allegedly made a deal with her to settle the case, had also approached the Uttarakhand High Court seeking exemption from arrest earlier, but his application was also rejected. He is still absconding.

Earlier, the SIT had arrested the victim from her Dehradun home after police collected enough evidence to indict her. She had bought land for Rs 17 lakh at Banjarawala in Dehradun using the money purportedly paid to her by the accused to reach a ‘compromise’.

Police had also recovered Rs six lakh unaccounted cash from her home. It should be mentioned here that based on victim’s complaint, a case under Sections 376 (2), 323, 506 and 66 IT Act was registered in the Rajpur Police Station on April 18, 2014. The victim had already recorded her statement before the magistrate under Section 164 of CrPC on April 22. The victim who was an employee at Joyland water park, near Sahastradhara owned by Pradeep Sangwan, had alleged that she was sexually exploited by Pradeep at a hotel in Mussoorie and Rajpur.
