A problem is in store for the Panchkula administration. With results of the Municipal Corporation expected to be announced on June 4, it is more worried about the building for newly elected body of Municipal Corporation of Panchkula than the elections itself.
Despite witnessing large scale urbanization, the Municipal Corporation in Panchkula continues to work from a Community Centre in Sector 4 for several years now and does not have a permanent building.
The Panchkula civic body was upgraded from Municipal Council to the status of Municipal Corporation two years back and this too has not brought any change as the body still operates from a makeshift office.
Officials in the MC said that they had requested Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to allot them land for constructing the building on several occasions but so far there was no progress.
"HUDA had shortlisted land for the Municipal Council from time to time in sectors 3, 4, 20 and 21 but the land was insufficient. We are in touch with the HUDA over allotting land for the building," said O P Sihag, Executive Officer of MC. "We continue to send them reminders as we need a proper office building so that employees are able to work efficiently," he added
However, the HUDA officials said that the Community Centre at Sector 4 was provided to the MC on temporary basis and the MC officials rejected several plots. When elections for new body of Municipal Corporation, which includes 20 councilors and Mayor of the MC are going to be held on June 2, officials are worried about the place where the meetings would take place.
The Executive Officer of MC says that the office will be shifted in a Government building for the time being.
Residents of Sector 4 for which the community centre was constructed are also an annoyed lot due to the occupation of the building by the civic body.
Col. Subhash Randhawa, local resident alleged that the Community Centre has been occupied by the MC illegally and they were not getting any benefit from the facility created by HUDA for locals.
"As this Community Centre is occupied by the MC, we have to look for hotels, farm houses or other places to organise any function or meeting, which is very costly affair, hence we want the Community Centre to be vacated by MC as early as possible," said Radhey Shyam another resident of Sector 4.
When contacted, some of the candidates who are contesting MC elections, said first they would concentrate on their victory in the polls and then on the place where they would get an office.
