Medical science, making rapid strides, has been enriched by contributions of ancient Indian physicians like Charaka and Sushruta, Prof Onkarnath Mohanty, former Vice-Chancellor of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), said.
Students taking the ‘Hippocratic Oath’, widely believed to be written by Hippocrates who is often regarded as the father of western medicine, while being inducted into a course in medical science, should do the same in the name of Charaka and Sushruta, he suggested while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the 7th batch of MBBS students at the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital on Friday.
Pointing out that there is a need for creativity in every sphere of life, Prof Mohanty said it is required more in the medical profession while stressing the need for coordination between the whole gamut of sciences.
Medical Superintendent of Sum Hospital Dr PK Mohanty and Prof Kiran Dukhu led the freshers in oath-taking. Gynaecologist Dr Sarojini Mohanty, who was the chief speaker on the occasion, urged the students to prepare to be doctors while inculcating an attitude of service to the people. She advised students to be sensitive about issues like sex-determination tests and female foeticide.
