Now, better road design near new-look ISBT Kashmere Gate

Thursday, 16 May 2013 | SR | New Delhi

In order to ease out traffic congestion on Ring Road near ISBT Kashmere Gate, the Delhi Traffic Police have proposed certain changes in the road design on the stretch between Hanuman Setu to the bus terminus.

The comprehensive plan, which includes shifting location of the entry to ISBT, has been submitted to transport and traffic planning body UTTIPEC. Officials said UTTIPEC had already given its in-principle approval.

The traffic police have identified four major day-long bottlenecks on the corridor that lead to massive snarls during the morning and evening peak hours. The plan has also proposed a solution to traffic woes in the area.

“The four major bottlenecks include narrowing down of the carriageway between Hanuman Setu and ISBT, angle of the tail of the Shahadra flyover loop, location of entry point of ISBT as well as location of the subway outside the gate of Nigambodh Ghat,” the proposal noted.

According to traffic officials, width of Hanuman Setu reduces from 22 metres to 14 metres, leading to traffic jams. The plan suggests that the carriageway leading from Salim Garh to ISBT bypass and the central verge and right arm of the subway might be shifted towards Nigambodh Ghat, where 8 metres of space is available. This, according to police, will also decongest the road in front of Nigambodh Ghat, towards Ring Road bypass.

“The angle of the tail of Shahadra flyover loop also affects movement near the ISBT entry and exits. location of the entry gate of ISBT itself is a cause. The plan suggests some changes in road infrastructure that will decongest the stretch,” said a senior traffic police official.

The plan is to shift the tail of the Shadadra flyover loop towards the ISBT complex so it takes up less of the curve. “This does not require major construction. Width of the central verge can be reduced by 1 metre, while the existing footpath along with the loop can also be removed. Its dead end puts the lives of pedestrians at risk and the stretch becomes prone to accidents, with vehicles coming from this loop from Ring Road,” the plan suggests.

“We have suggested DIMTS to shift the entry point on Boulevard Road. Currently, entry is just ahead of the tail of the flyover loop. If a big gate — at least 70-80 feet wide — is provided on Boulevard Road, the bus can easily enter ISBT without having any impact on traffic,” said the traffic official.
