Cold spell before April showers: Madhya Pradesh braces for rain and hailstorms

Monday, 31 March 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Night temperatures in Madhya Pradesh dipped to 10°C, creating pleasant weather conditions ahead of the predicted rain, hailstorms, and strong winds in the first week of April. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for hail, thunderstorms, and winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h on April 1 and 2 across several districts.

According to the forecast, Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Narmadapuram, and the eastern regions including Rewa and Shahdol divisions are likely to experience rainfall. Additionally, hailstorms are expected in certain districts, while strong winds may accompany the showers.

On Saturday, Bhopal recorded a day temperature of 35.8°C, while the night temperature stood at 16°C on Friday. Senior meteorologists attributed the upcoming weather changes to the influence of a Western Disturbance and Cyclonic Circulation System. On March 30, no major fluctuations are expected in day and night temperatures, with Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Gwalior-Jabalpur likely to hover around 35–36°C. However, the night temperatures will remain low, keeping the overall conditions pleasant. A shift in weather is expected from Monday, though intense heat remains unlikely despite sunshine during the day.

Hailstorms might occur in Harda, Khandwa, and Burhanpur, while light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected in Bhopal, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Indore, Dewas, Barwani, Khargone, Sehore, Narmadapuram, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Mandla, and Balaghat. Hail-prone areas include Barwani, Khargone, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Harda, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Mandla, and Balaghat, while thunderstorms and lightning could hit Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, Singrauli, Maihar, Katni, Umaria, Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindori, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Betul, Narmadapuram, Bhopal, Sehore, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Indore, and Dewas.

In the last 24 hours, day temperatures fell significantly by 2.1–3.2°C in Rewa, Jabalpur, and Shahdol divisions, while no major changes were observed in other divisions. They were 1.7–2.2°C below normal in Ujjain, Gwalior, and Rewa divisions, remaining normal elsewhere. Night temperatures dropped sharply by 4.9°C in Shahdol division and 2.5–2.7°C in Rewa and Sagar divisions, with no significant variation elsewhere. Bhopal division recorded night temperatures 6.1°C below normal, while Ujjain, Gwalior, Rewa, Shahdol, and Sagar divisions saw a drop of 3.5–4.2°C. Jabalpur division recorded a 1.5°C dip, with all other divisions maintaining normal temperatures.<With an imminent shift in weather patterns, residents are advised to stay updated on forecasts and take necessary precautions against hailstorms and thunderstorms.

Farmers across the state have been advised to take precautions to protect their crops from potential hailstorms and unseasonal rainfall, which could damage standing wheat, pulses, and vegetable yields.
