BIS cracks down on unauthorized use of ISI mark

Saturday, 29 March 2025 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a decisive move to uphold quality and safety standards, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jamshedpur Branch Office, conducted an enforcement raid on M/s Triveni Gold Pipe, located in Gujhandi, Koderma. The firm was found to be misusing the ISI mark on its conduits for electrical installations without a valid licence from BIS.

The raid was initiated following credible intelligence received about the unauthorized use of the ISI mark. In response,  Kunal Kumar, Director & Head of BIS, Jamshedpur, assembled a dedicated enforcement team to carry out the operation. The team included  Kaushelendra Kumar (Scientist-E),  Dilip Chattar (Scientist-D), and  Rohit Kumar (PS). Their objective was to investigate and take necessary action against the firm’s non-compliance with BIS regulations.

During the raid, the enforcement team seized a total of 36,570 pipes, each measuring 3 meters in length, that were falsely marked with the ISI certification. These products were being sold under the guise of BIS-certified goods, misleading consumers and compromising safety standards. The seized goods were immediately taken into custody by the BIS team as evidence of non-compliance.

Kaushelendra Kumar, Scientist-E, emphasized that the company had violated Section 17 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, which prohibits the unauthorized use of the ISI mark. He further explained that under Section 29(3) of the BIS Act, such a contravention is punishable by: Imprisonment of up to two years, or A fine of not less than ₹2 lakh, which can extend up to ten times the value of the seized goods.

This enforcement action serves as a stern warning to manufacturers engaging in fraudulent practices and misrepresentation of quality standards.

The BIS reiterated its commitment to ensuring that only certified and high-quality products are made available to consumers. Officials stated that any misuse of national certification marks poses a serious threat to consumer safety and erodes public trust in quality standards.

Moving forward, BIS has assured that strict enforcement measures will continue across industries to prevent similar violations. The agency urged consumers to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of ISI-marked products before purchase.

The enforcement action at Triveni Gold Pipe underscores BIS’s zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorized certification usage, reinforcing its role as a watchdog for quality and safety in the Indian market.
