World Day Against Trafficking in Persons observed in Assam
Kamrup district on Thursday observed the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026 with an awareness programme organised by Sankalp: District Hub for Empowerment of Women under the Women & Child Development Department, Assam, at the Conference Hall of the Integrated District Commissioner’s Office.
Addressing the programme, District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra highlighted the underlying causes of human trafficking and witch-hunting and stressed the need for preventive measures.
He urged all stakeholders to identify trafficking-prone and vulnerable areas, intensify awareness campaigns and promote education as an effective tool to combat these social evils. He expressed confidence that coordinated efforts by Government departments and the community would help eliminate trafficking and protect vulnerable sections of society.
A presentation on Mission Shakti was delivered during the programme, outlining its objectives and various sub-schemes aimed at the empowerment, protection and welfare of women.
Advocate Haripriya Rajbongshi of the Gauhati High Court delivered a presentation on the State Policy on Combating Human Trafficking and Ending Witch-Hunting. She discussed the prevailing challenges, legal provisions and the need to strengthen institutional mechanisms while enhancing community participation to effectively address these issues.
DSP Tinkujyoti Choudhury highlighted the initiatives undertaken by the police to prevent human trafficking and elaborated on the role of the Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) in rescue operations, investigations, rehabilitation and inter-agency coordination. He also emphasised the importance of collaborative planning and timely intervention to strengthen anti-trafficking efforts.
The Assistant LADC informed the gathering that the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has been conducting regular awareness programmes on human trafficking and related issues. He assured that the DLSA remains committed to providing legal assistance and support to those in need.
An interactive discussion session was held where participants shared their views and suggested measures to improve coordinated action against human trafficking and related social issues.
Participants were also informed about the Child Helpline 1098 and were encouraged to report cases involving children requiring assistance, care or protection.
Among those present at the programme were Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Parishad Siddhartha Goswami, ADC Geetashri Lachit, the Chief LADC, In-charge DSWO, CDPOs and representatives from various Government departments.
