Wangchuk’s health worsens on day 17 of Jantar Mantar protest

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar has now lasted 26 days. Activist Sonam Wangchuk is on a hunger strike that has reached its 17th day, and three students have joined him for the same duration. Protesters say the Government has not answered their calls for dialogue, policy changes, or the removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke posted on X that Wangchuk’s health has worsened during the hunger strike. Dipke said Wangchuk has lost over eight kilograms and is feeling weak and dizzy. Organisers said that with three students now joining the hunger strike, supporters are more concerned and are urging the government to start a dialogue before things get worse.
All day, protesters stayed under makeshift shelters at Jantar Mantar, holding signs calling for education reforms and chanting against reported exam problems. Volunteers handed out water and helped those on hunger strike, while supporters gathered at the site. The demonstration remains centred on calls for dialogue. Organisers said the protest focuses on demands for dialogue, the removal of the Union Education Minister following the NEET 2026 paper leak, concerns about CBSE online marking, and wider reforms in education and jobs. On July 20, they said a peaceful march to Parliament is scheduled at 9.00 a.m. The march is intended to present a formal set of demands and press lawmakers to address issues of exam integrity, education policy and youth employment.
As of July 14, protesters are still pushing for dialogue and policy changes. They say their main demands are education reforms, more job opportunities, and better Government accountability.
Organisers said the protest has entered its fourth week, with support from students, civil groups, and public figures, but there has been no official response from the Government.
