Varanasi Civic Body approves relocation of meat and fish shops to city outskirts

The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal to shift meat and fish shops from densely populated areas to designated locations on the outskirts of the city. The move is aimed at improving sanitation, reducing congestion, and addressing concerns related to public hygiene in busy urban markets.
According to officials, the decision was taken during a civic body meeting after discussions on urban planning and the management of commercial activities within city limits.
Authorities believe that relocating these shops to specific zones will help maintain cleanliness and streamline municipal services while ensuring that traders can continue their businesses in regulated spaces.
The proposal has generated mixed reactions among stakeholders. While some residents have welcomed the decision as a step towards better hygiene and urban management, several shop owners and traders have expressed concerns about the potential impact on their livelihoods, customer access, and business operations.
They have sought greater clarity regarding relocation sites, infrastructure, and compensation measures.
Municipal authorities have stated that consultations with affected traders will continue before the implementation process begins. The relocation plan is expected to be carried out in phases to minimise disruption and ensure a smooth transition for businesses.
