US Envoy Sergio Gor recalls Trump wanted to call PM Modi at 6 AM: ‘He Doesn't Sleep, He's Like Me’

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has shared an anecdote highlighting the close rapport between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recalling how Trump once wanted to call the Indian leader at 6 am, confident that Modi would already be awake.
Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit, Gor recounted an incident from a UFC event in Miami earlier this year. According to him, Trump suddenly suggested calling Prime Minister Modi, despite it being early morning in India.
"I told him it was 6 am in India, but the President replied, 'He will be up, he's like me, he doesn't sleep,'" Gor said. Since Trump had to take the stage shortly afterwards, the conversation with the Prime Minister was scheduled for the following day.
Gor said the episode reflected the personal friendship between the two leaders. "When you're friends with somebody, not everything needs to be scheduled," he remarked, adding that Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a genuine friend and holds him in high regard.
The US envoy also said Trump continues to have warm memories of his visit to India and looks forward to returning. Gor expressed optimism about the future of India-US ties, describing the relationship as strong and driven by the personal equation between the two leaders.
Touching upon bilateral trade, Gor said negotiations on the proposed India-US trade agreement are in their final stages, with only a few issues left to be resolved. He expressed confidence that the deal would be concluded soon after nearly 18 months of discussions.
