UP court awards 10-year term to man for wife’s dowry death

A court in Bareilly sentenced a 31-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the dowry death of his wife, a case lawyer said on Tuesday.
Additional Sessions Judge Ashok Kumar Yadav convicted Jogendra, a resident of Rampura village under Shergarh police station limits, and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.
Additional District Government Counsel Suresh Babu Sahu said the prosecution, represented by him and advocate Pankaj Mahant, examined eight witnesses during the trial.
According to the prosecution, the case dates back to 2023. Ram Autar, a resident of Labhera village, had married his sister Vidya to Jogendra in April 2023.
Soon after the marriage, Jogendra allegedly began harassing Vidya for dowry. A village panchayat was convened on August 1, 2023, to resolve the dispute, after which Jogendra took his wife back home after assuring her family. However, five days later, on the night of August 6, 2023, he allegedly killed Vidya.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother the following morning, an FIR was registered at Shergarh police station. Following investigation and trial, the court convicted Jogendra and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, the counsel added.
