One dead, another hospitalised after two labourers fall into sewer manhole in Mumbai

One labourer died and another was hospitalised after the two fell into a sewer manhole while cleaning a drainage line at a housing society in Mumbai on Monday, officials said.

The incident occurred at Bhavya Niketan housing society on Golibar Road No. 8, opposite V N Desai Hospital in Santacruz East.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Fire Brigade, the housing society had hired private workers to clean its internal sewer line.

During the operation, one of the workers allegedly opened a municipal sewer manhole without informing BMC officials. Both workers subsequently fell into the manhole, officials said.

Fire brigade personnel rescued the two workers and rushed them to V N Desai Hospital. One of them was declared dead on arrival, while the other was admitted to the hospital’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) for treatment.

The identities of the two workers were not immediately known.

Police, fire brigade personnel and a 108 ambulance were mobilised after the incident.

The accident came a day after two men died after allegedly inhaling toxic chemicals inside a public toilet in suburban Mumbai.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Monday’s incident, including how the workers entered the municipal sewer manhole while carrying out cleaning work.
