Union Cabinet clears Rs 13,038 crore Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project

In a noticeable push for urban mobility, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the second phase of the Jaipur Metro Rail Project. Estimated to cost Rs 13,038 crores. This project will have a 41-km North-South corridor from Prahladpura to Todi Mod with 36 stations.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decisions taken by the Union Cabinet for developing infrastructure in Rajasthan. “The approval is part of a larger set of Cabinet decisions clearing projects worth approximately Rs 1.74 lakh crore, which also include nutrient subsidies for farmers, expansion of the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery and major hydropower initiatives”.
The decision to grant approval for the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is being hailed as a game-changer for Rajasthan’s urban transport landscape, positioning Jaipur as one of the fastest-growing metro cities in India.
It will provide seamless connectivity between southern industrial and residential zones (Sitapura, Prahladpura, Sanganer and northern areas including Todi Mod, Ambabari, Vidhyadhar Nagar), passing through key landmarks like Gandhi Nagar, Tonk Phatak, Sawai Man Singh Hospital vicinity and potential interchanges with the existing Pink Line in Phase-1.
Once fully operational, phase 2 will serve lakhs of daily commuters, including workers in industrial areas, airport-bound passengers, and residents in rapidly growing suburbs. It will boost economic activity by improving last-mile connectivity to commercial hubs, educational institutions and healthcare facilities. Once fully operational, this project is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment during construction and operations. The project aligns with the broader vision of expanding Jaipur’s metro network, which currently operates the 9 km long Pink Line from Mansarovar to Chandpole under Phase-1.
Phase-2 will integrate with existing infrastructure, including a possible interchange at Chandpole and foot-over-bridge links at Jaipur Junction Railway Station. Officials said the work to construct phase-2 metro is anticipated to begin following the Cabinet nod as some advanced civil works have already been completed. The project will be completed within the stipulated period.
Interestingly, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma had earlier approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and put the proposal to the Centre on a fast track. The chief minister laid emphasis on the project’s importance for the State’s capital.
Meanwhile, the sources in the Bhajan Lal Sharma Government have indicated that the metro expansion will be made operational in this Government’s tenure.
It may be noted that the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation has been working on Phase-2 planning since the early 2010s, with multiple DPR revisions by consultants like RITES, DMRC and others. The current approval marks the culmination of detailed technical, financial and environmental assessments. According to officials, the 41-km metro line is expected to cater to the ever-growing population and urbanisation pressures in Jaipur, which has seen rapid expansion in its southern and eastern corridors.
Jaipur is set for a major infrastructural upgrade! Cabinet approval for Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is a significant step towards sustainable urban growth. It will expand connectivity, reduce congestion and enhance ‘Ease of Living’
