Trump issues fresh ultimatum to Iran

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that it has 48 hours to avoid serious consequences, reiterating the deadline from his March 26 ultimatum. He had earlier given Tehran 10 days to either strike a deal or reopen the Strait of Hormuz.“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to make a deal or open up the Hormuz Strait. Time is running out — 48 hours before all hell will reign down on them,” he wrote on social media. The latest ultimatum revives his earlier deadline, first issued in late March, when he demanded that Iran either reach an agreement with Washington or allow unimpeded passage through the key maritime route.
The stance marks a return to a more aggressive posture after a brief period of apparent diplomatic progress. Shortly after his initial threat to target Iran’s power infrastructure, Trump had indicated that discussions with Iranian officials were “very good and productive,” leading to a temporary delay in military action. Deadlines were subsequently extended more than once, raising hopes of a possible breakthrough. The renewed warning suggests that those efforts may have stalled.
Iran has not officially responded to the latest ultimatum, but previous statements from Tehran have rejected external pressure and warned against military threats. The situation therefore remains volatile, with the risk of miscalculation on both sides.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most critical corridors in the world, with a substantial share of global oil shipments passing through it. Any disruption in the waterway could have immediate consequences for international energy markets, potentially driving up oil prices and fuelling economic uncertainty worldwide.
