Tata Motors celebrates 250,000 EV sales in India

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), the electric vehicle arm of the country’s second-largest automaker Tata Motors celebrated a milestone achievement of having sold 250,000 electric vehicles. Addressing the media in Mumbai, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Managing Director Shailesh Chandra also announced that the Tata Nexon.EV had crossed unit sales of over 100,000 units.
Reiterating TPEM’s stance of promoting electric mobility in India, Chandra added that the carmaker will be launching two electric vehicles in 2026 under the Tata.EV badge, the electric version of the new Tata Sierra and the refresh of the Tata Punch.EV. In addition, he added that the carmaker will be rolling out the first electric vehicle under the premium ‘Avinya’ badge by the end of next year. Also, three new nameplates will be launched between Financial Year 2027 and 2030.
In order to boost the electric vehicle ecosystem and enhance their product portfolio in India, the company will be making significant investments of between INR16,000 - 18,000 crore in the coming year. This includes supporting over 100,000 public charging points for EVs by 2030. Chandra said that this was to ensure that despite new competition entering the electric vehicle space in India, TPEM could retain a market share of 45-50 percent in electric vehicles.
Chandra and the TPEM management team also highlighted the work that the company is doing in recycling older vehicle batteries. TPEM is running some pilot projects where older vehicle batteries are being used as energy storage solutions in rural areas. However, the company highlighted that due to major technological improvements in battery life and energy capacity, most new EVs have batteries that will easily outlive the useful life of the vehicle.
