Supreme Court hearing in Twisha Sharma Death Case
The Supreme Court heard the suo motu case related to the death of former model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma, focusing on allegations of procedural lapses, institutional bias, and irregularities in the investigation.
A three-judge Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, reviewed submissions from both the state and the parties involved. The case stems from Sharma’s death at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, which has triggered allegations of harassment and dowry-related abuse from her family.
During the hearing, the court noted concerns regarding public narratives forming around the case and stressed the importance of a fair and impartial investigation. The bench also observed that the state government’s decision to transfer the probe to the CBI was appropriate and in line with ensuring transparency.
The Solicitor General, appearing for the Madhya Pradesh government, told the court that the narrative around the case escalated after public statements made by individuals connected to the accused side. He also informed the court about procedural developments, including the registration of FIR and ongoing evidence collection.
In a controversial remark made during the proceedings, the Solicitor General stated that “it is better to have a divorced daughter than face such an unfortunate incident,” a comment that drew attention amid the emotionally charged nature of the case.
The Supreme Court also restrained potential witnesses and accused persons from making public statements to the media, emphasizing that such actions could influence the investigation.
The bench later disposed of the suo motu proceedings, stating that parties remain free to pursue appropriate legal remedies before the relevant forum. The court reiterated that the investigation must proceed without external influence and reach a logical conclusion based on evidence.
