Starmer may announce exit timeline as Burnham emerges as labour challenger

Pressure is mounting on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with growing expectations that he could announce a timetable for his resignation as early as Monday amid increasing unrest within the ruling Labour Party.
Speculation intensified after Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor and a prominent internal rival, won a special parliamentary election and entered Westminster with the stated aim of challenging Starmer's leadership. Starmer reportedly spent the weekend reflecting on his future, while his office declined to comment on reports of a possible exit.
Labour lawmakers have become increasingly frustrated by the government's declining popularity despite the party's landslide victory in the 2024 general election. Critics point to sluggish economic growth, persistent cost-of-living pressures and a series of political controversies that have weakened public confidence.
Burnham is seen as a leading contender to succeed Starmer, although former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has also indicated he would contest the leadership if a race is triggered. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump weighed in on the speculation, claiming Starmer had failed on immigration and energy policies.
Despite domestic challenges, Starmer has earned international recognition for supporting Ukraine and helping coordinate European responses to global crises. However, with pressure growing inside Labour, the Prime Minister's political future remains uncertain.
