Sub-inspector dies after shooting himself

A sub-inspector posted at Madhu Vihar police station in East Delhi shot himself with his service pistol on Monday and died of the injury. Police said the initial information indicates he had been suffering from depression for several days as senior officers and a forensic team reached the station to examine the scene and collect evidence.

The deceased has been identified as Somesh Meena, a Sub-Inspector of the 2019 batch. He shot himself on the upper floor of the Madhu Vihar police station.

Personnel present at the station heard the gunshot and rushed to the spot, where they found him injured. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Senior police officers and the forensic team arrived shortly after being informed, examined the site, and collected evidence. The family of the deceased has been notified.

A police investigation into the circumstances and reasons behind the suicide is currently underway. Investigators are examining the case in detail and collecting evidence from the scene. The exact reasons for the act are yet to be officially established, and police are conducting a thorough inquiry.

Two incidents involving Delhi Police personnel and firearms occurred in a single morning on Monday, one an alleged murder and one a suicide, raising broader questions about the welfare and mental health of police personnel in the capital.

The incident at Madhu Vihar police station occurs against the backdrop of growing research and institutional awareness in India about mental health stress among police personnel.

Law enforcement officers routinely face high operational pressure, irregular working hours, prolonged exposure to traumatic incidents, and limited access to structured psychological support. The police force as an institution has historically stigmatised mental health discussions, which can leave officers suffering from depression, anxiety, or occupational stress without adequate recourse before a crisis point is reached.

Sub-Inspector Meena was of the 2019 batch, meaning he had been in service for approximately seven years at the time of his death. At that career stage, officers typically handle heavy operational workloads while also navigating the personal and professional pressures that build up in the middle years of a police career. The use of a service weapon in a police station adds a dimension that distinguishes such incidents from civilian suicides. Service weapons are issued to protect officers and the public.
