Fresh violence in Manipur hill districts leaves at least nine dead

At least nine people were killed in fresh violence across Manipur’s Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, with gunfights, ambushes and arson reported in several locations.
The violence escalated in Kamjong district on Friday night after an exchange of fire involving security personnel and armed groups near Chassad village. A woman was killed in the incident, followed by further clashes and attacks on residential areas.
Several houses were reportedly set on fire in Kamjong, forcing residents to flee. Authorities stepped up security and imposed restrictions in affected areas to prevent further violence.
In Kangpokpi district, multiple people were killed in separate incidents involving armed groups. Three Naga village guards were reportedly among those killed in an attack on Makui Ashang village.
In Ukhrul district, a civilian was shot dead while travelling towards his farmland along the Imphal–Ukhrul road. Gunfire and arson were also reported in other villages, raising fears of further retaliatory attacks.
Security forces have been deployed in vulnerable areas as authorities attempt to contain the violence and restore order.
The latest clashes come amid continuing ethnic tensions in Manipur, where violence that erupted in May 2023 has led to repeated confrontations, displacement and loss of life.
