PM Modi to inaugurate projects worth over ₹13,000 crore during Chennai visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹13,000 crore during his visit to Chennai on Sunday.

A multi-tier security arrangement is in place across the city ahead of his visit, with police introducing traffic diversions along his transit routes.

Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore, along with projects across the highways, railways, ports, petroleum and education sectors.

The metro corridor features a 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations. It is expected to reduce travel time and improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.

The prime minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for National Highway projects worth around ₹3,700 crore in Tamil Nadu. He will also launch port-related projects at Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V O Chidambaranar Port.

Modi will inaugurate five Amrit Stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal. He will also dedicate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation.

The centre is a scientific initiative to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering different stages of life, from the foetal stage to old age.

Modi will also release C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas featuring more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain. The atlas is expected to help researchers identify potential therapeutic targets.

During his visit, the prime minister will attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

He is also scheduled to travel by Chennai Metro between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass stations and back. At around 12.15 pm, he will offer prayers at the Jalakandeswarar Temple and visit the Brain Centre at IIT Madras.

At around 1.30 pm, Modi will lay foundation stones for and dedicate various development projects before addressing a gathering.

The key highway projects include the 36-km, four-lane Vadugapatti–Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744A, the 30-km, four-lane Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A, and the proposed four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83.

The port projects are aimed at strengthening maritime infrastructure, expanding cargo-handling capacity and improving logistics efficiency.

Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the Group II/III Lube Oil Base Stocks project at the existing Manali Refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited in Chennai.

The project, estimated to cost around ₹1,620 crore, will have a capacity of 270,000 metric tonnes per annum. It aims to produce Group II/III base stocks for manufacturing premium-quality lubricants in India.
