Delhi Teen on Call With Father After IPL Match Dies in Hit-and-Run Accident, Truck Driver Absconding

A tragic hit-and-run accident in Delhi claimed the lives of two young men, including a 14-year-old student who was speaking to his father on the phone moments before the crash.

The victim, identified as Abhav Bhatia, a Class 10 student of Hansraj School, had gone to watch the IPL match between Delhi and Bengaluru on Monday evening. He was returning home on a motorcycle with his 20-year-old cousin, Yagya Bhatia, a BSc student, when the accident occurred near Ashoka Road.

According to police and family members, Abhav was on a call with his father, Sumit Bhatia, informing him that he was on his way home. While the call was ongoing, a truck allegedly rammed into their motorcycle from behind.

In the chaos, the phone slipped from Abhav’s hand and the call abruptly went silent. Moments later, a stranger picked up the phone and informed the father that an accident had taken place.

Police said the call was received around 10:30 pm, after which emergency teams rushed to the spot. Both victims were found critically injured and were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.

Eyewitnesses reported that the impact of the collision was severe, throwing both riders and their motorcycle onto the road. Passersby alerted authorities and helped shift the victims to the hospital.

Investigators confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. The vehicle was later traced to the trans-Yamuna area and has been seized, but the driver remains absconding.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections and are scanning CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to trace the accused.

The victims were reportedly not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Family members have demanded strict action against the driver, calling the incident a devastating loss. The investigation into the hit-and-run case is ongoing.
