CJP to hold 'Jail Bharo Andolan' in Mumbai on October 2

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said on Monday that the outfit would hold a “Jail Bharo Andolan” in Mumbai on October 2 after the city police turned down its request to stage a protest at Shivaji Park on Gandhi Jayanti.

“Jail Bharo Andolan in Mumbai. October 2, Shivaji Park. #SaveDemocracy,” Dipke wrote on X.

The proposed demonstration was aimed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with the CJP seeking his resignation. The party is also seeking a freeze on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and amendments to the laws governing the Election Commission.

The Mumbai Police said it could not authorise a gathering at Shivaji Park, referring to a Bombay High Court ruling and orders subsequently issued by the Maharashtra government. The police also cited possible noise pollution, traffic congestion and disruption to the movement of people in the area, and asked the organisers to consider another location.

Dipke had earlier objected to the refusal of permission, saying attempts to suppress citizens' voices could not be accepted. He subsequently announced the Jail Bharo protest for October 2.
