Jon Watts to direct new 'Star Wars' trilogy, Episode X

Filmmaker Jon Watts, best known for directing Tom Holland's "Spider-Man" trilogy, is set to helm a new "Star Wars" film that will launch a fresh trilogy in the franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Watts will direct the first film in the new trilogy, which will continue the mainline "Skywalker Saga" and is expected to be "Episode X", the entertainment news outlet reported.

The "Skywalker Saga" comprises the nine films at the centre of the "Star Wars" franchise and follows the bloodline and legacy of Anakin, Luke and Leia Skywalker.

The upcoming film will be written by Simon Kinberg, who will also produce the project. Actor Daisy Ridley is reportedly set to return as Rey, the character she played in the previous "Star Wars" trilogy.

Further details about the project, including its plot and other cast members, have been kept under wraps.

Watts first drew attention with the low-budget thriller "Cop Car", starring Kevin Bacon. He later joined Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures to direct the "Spider-Man" films starring Holland.

He made his breakthrough with "Spider-Man: Homecoming", which released in 2017 and was followed by "Spider-Man: Far From Home" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home".

The trilogy collectively grossed billions of dollars worldwide and established Watts as a director of major Hollywood studio productions.

His most recent directorial outing was the action-comedy "Wolfs", starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
