Calcutta HC allows Mamata Banerjee’s July 8 rally over Baruipur rape-murder case

The Calcutta High Court allowed former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to hold a rally on July 8 in connection with the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas. The court’s decision came after the Trinamool Congress leader approached it seeking permission for the protest programme.
The rally is expected to focus on demands for justice for the victim and highlight concerns over women's safety and law and order in the state. The case has triggered widespread outrage, with political parties and civil society groups demanding strict action against those responsible.
The incident came to light after the girl's body was recovered in the Baruipur area, following which protests erupted among locals. Police have arrested multiple accused persons and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
The matter has also led to a political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the TMC. Earlier, TMC leaders had alleged that heavy security deployment outside Mamata Banerjee’s residence was aimed at stopping her from visiting the victim’s family, while the BJP rejected the charge and said the arrangements were part of routine security measures.
Mamata Banerjee had earlier led a candlelight protest in Kolkata over the incident, demanding justice for the victim. The July 8 rally is expected to intensify the political debate surrounding the case.
