75-Year-old Himachal man with 32 degrees appears for another exam

At an age when many people choose a relaxed life after retirement, 75-year-old Milkhi Ram from Himachal Pradesh continues to chase his passion for education. Holding an impressive record of 32 academic degrees, Ram recently appeared for another examination, proving that the desire to learn has no age limit.
A resident of Gandar area in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, Ram appeared for a Sanskrit examination at the IGNOU study centre in Hamirpur on June 30. He was the oldest candidate at the centre, and his dedication inspired several students appearing alongside him.
The MA in Sanskrit programme at IGNOU, which Ram is pursuing, is recognised as equivalent to an ‘Acharya’ degree. His academic journey began while working in the Forest Department, where he joined in 1972. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1976 and continued his studies despite professional and family responsibilities.
By the time he retired from a Grade-I position in 2010, Ram had earned 26 degrees. Over the years, his academic achievements have grown to 32 degrees, including qualifications such as BEd, LLB, Journalism, MBA, MPhil, and a PhD in Hindi. He has also completed multiple postgraduate degrees in subjects including Hindi, Political Science, Sociology, History, English and Economics.
Ram said education is a lifelong asset and encouraged young people to continue learning despite challenges. He credited his wife Vidya Devi and family members for their constant support throughout his academic journey.
IGNOU officials praised Ram’s determination, saying his story shows that success depends not on age but on passion, discipline and commitment. His journey has become an inspiration for students and learners across generations.
