Seva Dharma: The Glory of Selfless Service

When history fades and applause falls silent, it is selfless seva that continues to live on, in healed wounds, uplifted lives, and grateful hearts. For fifty years, inspired by the timeless ideal of seva, BAPS volunteers have transformed compassion into action across the globe. From disaster relief and humanitarian aid to education, healthcare, and moral upliftment, their silent sacrifices have touched millions of lives
The word ‘seva’ originates from the Sanskrit tradition and signifies service performed without expectation of reward. However, in spiritual terms, even in helping others, seva is a sacred expression of devotion, a selfless offering performed not for personal gain, but out of love for God and reverence for the guru.
Bhagwan Swaminarayan elevated seva to a spiritual discipline and an important sadhna, teaching that true greatness lies in serving devotees and humanity.
Today, that same ideal continues to shine through the life of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the living spiritual successor in the Gunatit tradition of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. His life stands as a gentle yet powerful reminder that true greatness lies in serving others.
Long before he became the spiritual leader of a global fellowship, the young Mahant Swami imbibed the spirit of seva at the feet of Guru Yogiji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
In those early years, the number of volunteers was limited, yet the demands of service were immense. During festivals and special occasions, thousands of devotees would flock to the mandirs, creating an endless stream of responsibilities that required attention.
Whether it was washing utensils late into the night, preparing facilities for arriving devotees, assisting in the kitchen, cleaning the premises, or attending to countless unseen tasks, young Mahant Swami embraced every responsibility with joy and enthusiasm. No service was too small, no duty beneath him. The greater the need, the greater was his eagerness to serve.
These seemingly simple acts of service became the foundation of a life dedicated to the service of the entire humanity. Through his own example, Mahant Swami Maharaj has inspired generations to embrace seva not as an occasional activity, but as a way of life. Under his guidance, selfless service has blossomed into a global movement, touching countless lives and demonstrating that when service is offered with humility and devotion, it becomes a pathway to both personal transformation and God-realisation.
Under his guidance, thousands have transformed their talents, time, and energy into instruments of service. Today, more than 100,000 registered BAPS volunteers form one of the world’s largest voluntary service networks, united not by obligation but by a shared spirit of compassion and devotion.
For over five decades, these volunteers have worked tirelessly across the globe, serving day and night wherever humanity calls. They have rushed to the aid of victims during earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, famines, and other natural disasters. They have provided relief and support in conflict zones, including during the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Their service extends far beyond emergency response, reaching into healthcare, education, environmental conservation, tribal upliftment, women’s empowerment, community development, and the promotion of moral and spiritual values.
Behind this vast movement of service lies a simple yet profound inspiration: the belief that serving humanity is serving God and Guru. What began as a seed of selfless service nurtured by the BAPS gurus has grown into a mighty tree whose branches touch millions of lives across the world.
That extraordinary journey of devotion, sacrifice, and selfless service reached a magnificent crescendo on the evening of December 7, 2024, when Ahmedabad’s iconic Narendra Modi Stadium was transformed into a dazzling tribute to seva. Beneath the glow of thousands of lights and amidst an atmosphere charged with gratitude and inspiration, the grand finale of the BAPS Karyakar Suvarna Mahotsav brought together more than 100,000 volunteers to celebrate fifty years of service to society and spirituality.
As inspiring presentations, vibrant performances, and heartfelt tributes unfolded across the vast stadium, the gathering became far more than a commemorative event. It was a living testament to the power of one timeless ideal, the ideal of selfless service. Every performance, every applause, and every moment echoed the silent sacrifices of countless volunteers who had dedicated themselves to serving others without seeking recognition.
To honour this remarkable legacy of selfless service and inspire the volunteers to continue their noble mission, the grand Mahotsav brought together several distinguished leaders and dignitaries. Addressing the gathering, Honourable Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a heartfelt tribute to the spirit of BAPS volunteerism and reflected on his personal association with Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
In his video message, Honourable PM Shri Narendra Modi also praised the selfless spirit of the volunteers and offered his heartfelt wishes and respects for the occasion. He said, “It is a great achievement for any organisation to register and organise more than 100,000 volunteers to serve dedicatedly and faithfully for society. I congratulate and convey my well wishes to you all. My connection with Pramukh Swami Maharaj is an integral part of my life.”
Of course, every act of selfless seva leaves a footprint not on stone, but on human hearts.
