50-year-old man held for attempting to rape his 9-year-old granddaughter in Pune

A disturbing case has surfaced from Pune, where a 70-year-old man has been detained for allegedly attempting to sexually assault his nine-year-old granddaughter in the Parvati area, police said.
The incident came to light when a neighbour noticed the child struggling through a gap in a tin sheet wall and immediately raised an alarm. Residents rushed to the spot, overpowered the accused, and alerted the police.
According to Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Sahane, officers reached the location around 9:30 pm and took the accused into custody. He said that while medical examinations ruled out penetration, the act falls under serious offences, and a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The victim has been discharged from the hospital, and the accused is expected to be produced before a court.
The incident triggered widespread protests in the area, with hundreds of residents blocking roads and demanding swift action. Police deployment has since been increased to maintain order.
The case comes amid heightened public anger over a series of crimes against minors in Maharashtra, including a recent incident in Nasrapur. Concerns are growing over the safety of children, particularly in cases involving individuals known to the victims.
Political reactions have also emerged, with leaders calling for stricter laws and urgent measures to curb crimes against women and children.
Authorities have assured that the matter is being investigated thoroughly and that strict action will be taken in accordance with the law.
