Poll setbacks trigger push for INDIA bloc unity

The decimation of the TMC in West Bengal and poor performance of DMK and its alliance partner Congress in Tamil Nadu, has apparently come as a blessing in disguise for the Opposition parties, which never presented a united face after the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
A day after the massive electoral loss in what is considered to be her home turf, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee sought to pivot at the national stage, emphasising that she will work on strengthening the Opposition INDIA bloc. In the past, the TMC has played truant by keeping in and out of the INDIA bloc meetings, including during the Parliament floor strategy meets. Mamata had also criticised Rahul Gandhi’s leadership credentials.
“INDIA bloc leaders called me up to express solidarity. Top Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have spoken to me. Arvind Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav and Hemant Soren also spoke to me,” Mamata said on Tuesday.
Rahul Gandhi, in a social media post, expressed his party and himself to be on the side of Mamata by stating that elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu were stolen and alleged that the BJP and the election machinery conspired to repeat what they did in Haryana, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attributed the BJP’s West Bengal win to a “significant role” played by the Election Commission (EC). He also cited a consolidation of Hindu votes and a fractured minority mandate. Shiv Sena (Uddhav) leader Sanjay Raut said outgoing Mamata committed a “big mistake” by not listening to Rahul Gandhi and not holding alliance talks with him.
Abdullah also said the INDIA bloc needs to define its role in the political landscape of the country and make it clear whether the opposition alliance was limited to the parliamentary elections or extended to the state elections as well.
Raut said despite the defeats of prominent opposition leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin in the assembly elections, the future of the Opposition India bloc was very bright.
