PM urged to ensure safety of Indian students in Iran

The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take urgent steps to ensure the safety and security of Indian medical students pursuing their education in Iran, against the backdrop of growing unrest in the country.
In a formal communication addressed to the Prime Minister, Mohammad Momin Khan, Vice President of AIMSA’s Jammu and Kashmir unit, raised concerns about the well-being of nearly 3,000 Indian medical students enrolled in various Iranian medical universities. He noted that the evolving internal situation in Iran has heightened anxiety among students and their families back home. Khan called upon the Government of India to adopt all necessary precautionary measures to protect the students’ lives, personal safety, and academic continuity.
He emphasized the need for constant monitoring of the situation by the Ministry of External Affairs, closer coordination with the Indian Embassy in Iran, and the issuance of timely advisories to keep students informed.
The AIMSA leader also suggested the establishment of dedicated emergency helplines and urged authorities to remain prepared with contingency plans, including evacuation arrangements if the situation deteriorates. Such proactive steps, he said, would help instil confidence and reassurance among students and their families.
Highlighting the long-term significance of the issue, Khan stated that Indian medical students studying abroad form a vital part of the country’s future healthcare system and their safety should be accorded the highest priority.
The appeal comes at a time when Iran has witnessed fresh protests linked to economic distress and rising living costs. According to reports, at least seven people have been killed in clashes between protesters and security forces in several cities, particularly in rural provinces. Iranian authorities have also arrested dozens of individuals on charges related to disturbing public order, including 30 suspects detained in western Tehran.
Videos circulating on social media have shown protesters raising strong anti-Government slogans, reflecting growing public anger. The current wave of demonstrations is being described as the most significant since 2022, when the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody sparked widespread unrest across the country, though the present protests have so far been more localized.
In light of these developments, AIMSA has reiterated its demand for swift and effective intervention by Indian authorities to ensure that Indian students in Iran remain safe and adequately supported during the ongoing uncertainty.
