PM Modi, Rajnath Singh recall Emergency, call it a dark chapter in India’s Democracy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh marked the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency, describing it as one of the darkest periods in India’s democratic history and a reminder of the importance of safeguarding constitutional values.
In a message shared on social media, PM Modi said the Emergency represented a direct assault on the Constitution and democratic institutions. He noted that fundamental rights were suspended, political opponents were jailed, press freedom was curtailed, and democratic processes were undermined during the 21-month period.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to those who resisted the Emergency and fought to protect democracy, stating that their sacrifices continue to inspire future generations. He emphasized the need to remain committed to constitutional principles and democratic governance.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also termed the Emergency one of the darkest chapters in independent India’s history. He said the occasion serves as an opportunity to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to democracy, civil liberties, and the rule of law.
Several BJP leaders and party workers across the country observed the day through events and discussions highlighting the impact of the Emergency and the importance of preserving democratic institutions.
The Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, remained in force until March 1977 and continues to be a significant chapter in India's political history.
