PM Modi meets world's oldest living land animal Jonathan during Seychelles visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Jonathan, the world's oldest living land animal, during his visit to the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens. The visit formed part of his engagements in Seychelles as the two countries mark 50 years of diplomatic relations.
Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise believed to have been born in 1832, is estimated to be around 194 years old. Recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living land animal, the tortoise remains one of Seychelles' most iconic attractions despite age-related vision and smell impairments.
During his visit, PM Modi also planted a tree at the botanical gardens, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable development. The symbolic gesture underscored India's commitment to climate action and ecological preservation.

The Prime Minister is in Seychelles as the Guest of Honour for the country's National Day celebrations. His visit is expected to strengthen bilateral ties, with discussions focusing on maritime security, the blue economy, climate resilience, capacity building, and development cooperation.
The visit comes on the eve of the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, reaffirming the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
