Govt caps sugar dealer stocks
The Government has capped sugar stocks that dealers can hold, restricting inventory to 4,000 quintals for a maximum of 30 days, in a move aimed at curbing rising prices. The order, issued under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025, will take effect from August 1 and remain in force until November 30, 2026. The decision follows a sharp rise in ex-mill sugar prices to Rs 45 per kg from Rs 39 per kg over the past three months. Dealers will also be required to declare and regularly update their sugar stocks on the Government portal. The restrictions will not apply to stocks held on behalf of the Government or for distribution through the Public Distribution System. The Government has already banned sugar exports to boost domestic availability amid concerns over a deficit monsoon. Industry body ISMA welcomed the move, calling it a balanced and seasonal measure to ensure adequate supplies and price stability. India’s sugar production for the 2025-26 marketing season is estimated at 279 lakh tonnes, up from 261 lakh tonnes a year earlier. Earlier this month, industry bodies urged traders and institutional buyers to avoid speculative buying, saying the country has sufficient sugar stocks.
Heavy rains batter Himachal Pradesh
Flashfloods and landslides triggered by heavy rain wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district on Tuesday, damaging more than 25 houses and a shop, while burying over a dozen vehicles under debris. No casualties have been reported. The Sultanpur Nallah overflowed, inundating nearby residential areas, while boulders and debris carried by the Tadoli Nallah destroyed a store. A landslide near Bhariad on the Udaipur-Golthi-Navodaya road buried cars, trucks and two-wheelers. The State Emergency Operation Centre said 178 roads remain closed across the State, including 58 in Mandi, 42 in Kullu and 30 in Chamba.
The rain has also disrupted 107 water supply schemes and damaged 62 power transformers. Shimla may face water supply disruptions after flooding and transformer failure at the Satluj Water Supply Project. The Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state over the next two days, warning of a moderate flashflood risk in seven districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu and Shimla. Authorities have advised people to avoid rivers and streams and follow weather advisories. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 30, rain-related incidents have claimed 15 lives in Himachal Pradesh.
