US issues alert for Bangladesh
The US on Friday issued a security alert for its citizens in Bangladesh, urging vigilance and avoidance of crowds ahead of parliamentary elections and a national referendum on February 12. The advisory warned that political violence or extremist attacks could target rallies, polling stations, and religious sites, including churches, temples, and mosques. Citizens were advised to avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile, and plan alternative travel routes. Bangladesh has announced transport restrictions from February 10, with complete limitations on February 11-12. The US Embassy in Dhaka will provide limited onsite services during this period. US Ambassador Brent T Christensen met Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman on Friday, emphasising collaboration with all political parties to advance peace and stability. Nearly 2,000 candidates from over 50 parties are contesting 300 parliamentary seats, with four deaths reported since campaigning began on January 22. Observers from 16 countries will monitor the elections, where the BNP is currently the frontrunner following last year’s political changes.
Tharoor praises Rahul, signals unity
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday praised former party president Rahul Gandhi, calling him a “sincere leader” and a “strong voice” against communalism, signaling warming ties with the party leadership after meeting Gandhi and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi. Kerala Opposition Leader VD Satheesan confirmed Tharoor will be a star campaigner for the Congress-led UDF in the upcoming Assembly polls. “I am going to be in Congress and part of the poll campaign,” Tharoor said, clarifying that his past remarks on the Modi Government were from a national perspective, not political opposition. Tharoor admitted disagreements in the past but said he has always stood with the party in Parliament. The meeting with Gandhi and Kharge resolved grievances, with Tharoor noting, “all is good” and “we are on the same page.” The Congress plans to feature him in campaigns across all 140 Kerala constituencies ahead of the high-stakes elections.
