Nepal Curfew continues for fourth day in India-bordering Sunsari due to communal tensions

An indefinite curfew continued for a fourth day Thursday, July 30, in several parts of Nepal's Sunsari district bordering India following communal violence leaving one dead and dozens injured.

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called a meeting of the National Security Council on Thursday to review the security situation in the country, particularly in Sunsari district.

The security situation in the district is gradually improving, said Poshan Lamichhane, assistant chief district officer of Sunsari.

The district administration has extended the curfew, first imposed Monday,27 July to 10 areas, including the East-West Highway, to control the situation. It will remain in force until further notice.

The curfew prohibits the movement of people, gatherings, demonstrations, public meetings and sit-ins. Security has also been stepped up in sensitive areas and around government offices.

One person was killed and more than a dozen people, including security personnel were injured when police opened fire to disperse clashing groups following a dispute during celebrations by two religious communities.
