NDA wins 19 of 26 seats, moves closer to two-thirds majority in Rajya Sabha

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has strengthened its position in the Rajya Sabha after winning 19 out of 26 seats in the latest round of elections, further narrowing the gap towards a two-thirds majority in the Upper House.
The Congress-led INDIA bloc secured six seats, while the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) won one seat in Mizoram, according to election results. The outcome marks a significant boost for the ruling coalition’s legislative strength in Parliament.
With the latest gains, the NDA has improved its numbers in the Rajya Sabha, enhancing its ability to push key legislation more effectively. Political observers say the results could reshape parliamentary dynamics, especially on bills requiring a special majority.
However, the alliance is still short of the two-thirds mark, which is required for passing constitutional amendments and other critical legislative changes without reliance on opposition support. Analysts note that while the NDA’s position has improved steadily through recent elections and defections, reaching the threshold remains a challenging political milestone.
The latest results are part of ongoing biennial Rajya Sabha elections, which continue to influence the balance of power in India’s Upper House.
