MG Motors sees sharp growth in EV sales

MG Motor India, a joint venture between China’s SAIC Motor and the Sajjan Jindal-promoted JSW Group, has emerged as a key driver in the country’s accelerating electric vehicle (EV) transition. Its sales momentum reflects both rising consumer acceptance and a maturing EV ecosystem. The company reported EV sales of 61,171 units in 2025, more than doubling its 2024 tally of 28,882 units — marking a sharp 111 percent year-on-year growth.
This surge underscores MG’s early-mover advantage in India’s EV space, supported by a focused portfolio and increasing localisation efforts. Models like the ZS EV and Comet have played a crucial role in broadening appeal across urban buyers, combining practicality with relatively accessible pricing. The growth story has continued into 2026, albeit at a more measured pace. Between January and April 2026, MG sold 17,539 EVs, compared to 16,220 units during the same period in 2025 — translating to a 9 percent increase, indicating a gradual stabilisation after a phase of rapid expansion.
Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director, JSW MG Motor India, said, “We appreciate the Honorable PM’s appeal encouraging citizens to make conscious choices that boost savings and reduce FOREX outflow. The auto industry remains optimistic about a rapid shift towards EVs, a technology that is cost-effective for the consumer, supports India’s sustainability goals and helps reduce crude oil imports. As the ecosystem continues to evolve, charging infrastructure will also expand, making EV journeys more seamless.”
Looking ahead, MG is also preparing to expand its electrified portfolio with the launch of its first plug-in hybrid vehicle in India later this year, signalling a broader strategy to cater to evolving consumer preferences.
MG’s performance aligns with broader industry trends, where EV adoption in India is being driven by improving charging infrastructure, favourable government policies, and rising awareness around sustainability and total cost of ownership.
