Mayor Pravesh Wahi directs strict action against spas, hotels flouting MCD norms

Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi on Saturday directed officials to step up inspection of spa centres, hotels and other commercial establishments and take strict action against any violation of civic rules.
Chairing a review meeting with senior officials of Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) Public Health Department, Wahi asked deputy health officers of all 12 zones to hold weekly review meetings and intensify surveillance and enforcement drives across the city, according to a statement.
The directions come in the wake of recent fire incidents in Lucknow and Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, with the mayor asking officials to ensure that such cases are not repeated.
Later, Wahi said that the corporation has received many complaints regarding unauthorised spa centres, hotels and motels.
“In order to ensure that no untoward incidents occur in the future, officials have been instructed to ensure commercial establishments, including motels, hotels and spa centres, adhere to local laws,” he said.
At the meeting, he directed officials to keep a close watch on spa centres falling under the MCD’s jurisdiction and said violation of municipal rules would not be tolerated. He also urged the Delhi Police to strengthen surveillance and take action wherever required.
The mayor also ordered stricter monitoring of hotels and motels operating under the civic body’s jurisdiction and instructed officials to initiate action against establishments found violating MCD norms.
He further directed sanitation inspectors to carry out joint enforcement drives at bulk waste generators, including restaurants, hotels and banquet halls, to ensure proper waste management and cleanliness within their premises as well as in surrounding areas.
