Leaders unite in praise of Machchhar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Opposition leaders and international figures on Thursday hailed Captain Smit Machchhar for his courage and presence of mind during a mid-air emergency aboard a flydubai flight, saying his actions helped avert a major tragedy and save hundreds of lives.
President Murmu said the country was proud of Machchhar’s courage and presence of mind. “Even after being seriously injured in a moment of grave peril, he remained determined to protect the lives of others,” she posted on X, adding that his response helped prevent a major tragedy. She also wished him a speedy recovery.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan similarly praised Machchhar, saying his decisive action, despite sustaining serious injuries, helped avert a potentially catastrophic incident.
Prime Minister Modi said Machchhar displayed exceptional courage in the face of grave danger.
“His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy,” PM Modi posted on X, while praying for the pilot’s recovery.
Later, while speaking at an event marking the centenary of the Union Public Service Commission, Modi again praised the pilot’s patience, judgement and bravery. He also referred to Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks comparing the incident to an attempted attack resembling the September 11 attacks.
PM Modi separately spoke to Machchhar’s wife and parents and commended the pilot for his actions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Machchhar had placed his own safety at risk while carrying out his duty. “Putting his own life on the line, he upheld the highest traditions of duty and service,” Singh said, adding that the pilot’s courage and composure were a source of inspiration.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also praised Machchhar’s “extraordinary courage and remarkable presence of mind”, saying his actions helped save lives during the emergency.
Political leaders across party lines joined in the tributes. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said he saluted Machchhar, the crew and others who demonstrated courage and presence of mind during the incident.
BJP president Nitin Nabin described Machchhar’s actions as an example of courage and duty, while RSS national media and communication head Sunil Ambekar said the pilot’s actions helped protect more than 170 people aboard the aircraft.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also praised Machchhar, describing him as a source of pride for Maharashtra and India. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the pilot’s courage and commitment to his duty would be remembered.
