K Annamalai Quits BJP; Party Accepts Resignation Amid Tamil Nadu Political Shake-Up

In a major political development in Tamil Nadu, senior BJP leader and former state president K Annamalai has quit the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the party formally accepting his resignation from primary membership. The move ends days of speculation over his future within the organisation and marks a significant shift in the party’s state leadership dynamics.
In an official statement, the BJP confirmed that party national president Nitin Nabin had accepted Annamalai’s resignation. The development came just hours before Annamalai was scheduled to interact with the public in an online session, adding further weight to the sudden announcement.
Sources indicate that Annamalai had recently held multiple rounds of discussions with top BJP leadership in Delhi, including meetings with senior leaders Amit Shah and organisational general secretary BL Santhosh. Reports suggest he expressed a desire to part ways with the party on “cordial terms,” following internal differences over political strategy in Tamil Nadu.
The exit comes amid growing tensions within the state unit, particularly after the BJP revived its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Party insiders suggest that Annamalai had pushed for the BJP to contest independently in order to expand its base, while the central leadership opted for an alliance-driven approach.
His removal as Tamil Nadu BJP president earlier was also seen as part of the larger realignment within the state unit, especially after alliance negotiations gained momentum. Political observers believe leadership changes were influenced by electoral strategy considerations involving key regional partners.
Annamalai, a former IPS officer, joined the BJP in 2020 after resigning from civil services and quickly rose through the ranks to become state president. Known for his aggressive political style and strong public presence, he played a key role in expanding the party’s visibility in Tamil Nadu, although he did not secure electoral victories in either the 2021 Assembly or 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Reports also suggest that Annamalai is now planning to launch a new grassroots movement focused on grooming young leaders in Tamil Nadu, which could eventually evolve into a political platform in the future.
