Jaipur bus overturns in Karol Bagh, two dead, 23 injured

A sleeper tourist bus from Jaipur overturned early Wednesday in central Delhi's Karol Bagh, killing two passengers and injuring 23 others, police said. The accident occurred around 1:05 am near Jhandewalan Temple when the bus, carrying roughly 30 passengers, lost control and tipped onto its side.
Police and local residents launched a swift rescue operation. A passing JCB machine was used to lift and stabilise the bus, while roadside cement blocks were employed to prevent further movement. Passengers trapped inside were evacuated, with critically injured victims rushed to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital. Twelve were admitted to RML, including the two who later died, and ten to Ganga Ram Hospital; one was shifted to Lady Hardinge Medical College.
One of the deceased has been identified as Shehbaj Alam, 30, from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. The second victim, aged 25-26, is yet to be identified.The bus, bearing Rajasthan registration RJ-14PE-5065, was en route from Jaipur to Fatehpuri in Sadar Bazar. Though it had a seating capacity of 70, it carried about 30 passengers at the time. Driver Pankaj Kumar, 26, from Alwar, Rajasthan, has been detained and is undergoing treatment at Lady Hardinge Medical College.
Investigators are recording passenger statements and conducting a technical inspection of the vehicle to determine the cause. Police officials credited the prompt coordination of officers and locals for limiting casualties. The incident underscores the hazards of overnight highway travel and the importance of strict safety adherence.
