International delegation arrives in Assam to observe Assembly polls

A 15-member international delegation has arrived in Guwahati to observe the ongoing electoral process for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections as part of the International Election Visitors Programme (IEVP).
The delegation includes representatives from election management bodies of seven countries Angola, Egypt, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Benin, and Croatia, along with three officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Their two-day visit is aimed at gaining firsthand insight into India’s electoral system and practices. The IEVP initiative is designed to showcase the strengths and scale of India’s election management while encouraging the exchange of best practices among participating countries. The programme offers visiting delegates a comprehensive understanding of India’s electoral framework, institutional mechanisms, and innovations in election administration.
Upon their arrival at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the delegates were divided into three groups and taken to various distribution centres and control rooms across Kamrup Metropolitan and Kamrup districts.
These visits allowed them to assess on-ground preparations for the elections. The delegation later visited the Webcasting Monitoring Centre at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Assam.
During a meeting at the CEO’s office, Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel, State Police Nodal Officer Akhilesh Singh, and other senior officials briefed the visitors on key aspects of the electoral process, including logistics, security, and technology deployment.
On April 9, which is polling day, the delegates are scheduled to visit polling stations in both districts. They will observe various stages of the voting process, including mock polls, security arrangements, and the use of election technology.
The visit underscores India’s efforts to promote transparency and international collaboration in election management while highlighting the robustness of its democratic processes.
