IIT Roorkee hosts cyclothon, tree plantation drive

Marking World Environment Day with a strong message of sustainability and environmental responsibility, IIT Roorkee organised a grand Cyclothon under the theme “Save Fuel” in collaboration with the Gangey Foundation and the Sports Council of IIT Roorkee.
The initiative aimed to promote fuel conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable living, drawing enthusiastic participation from more than 500 students.
The Cyclothon was flagged off by Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, who emphasized that World Environment Day is more than a symbolic observance and serves as an opportunity to reinforce collective commitment towards environmental conservation. Appreciating the efforts of the Gangey Foundation and the Sports Council, he noted that such initiatives inspire young people to actively contribute to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
Referring to the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, Prof. Pant encouraged participants to plant more trees and ensure their long-term care and protection. He highlighted that rising carbon emissions, water scarcity, and climate change remain some of the most pressing global challenges, requiring active participation from every individual.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. A.K. Pandey, Head of Sports, IIT Roorkee, said that the Cyclothon was organized to create awareness about fuel conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable lifestyles. He pointed out that increasing air pollution, the global energy crisis, and excessive dependence on oil and gas have emerged as serious concerns. Promoting cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transportation, he said, can significantly reduce pollution while fostering a healthier society.
Prof. Pandey further noted that increasing the use of bicycles in daily life and reducing dependence on fossil fuels can play a vital role in environmental protection and energy conservation. He informed that nearly 500 participants took part in the Cyclothon, contributing to its success. As part of the celebration, more than 100 saplings were planted across the campus.
He also appreciated the efforts of the Gangey Foundation and its Founder, Girijansh Gopalan, for their dedicated work in promoting environmental awareness and encouraging public participation in conservation initiatives.
Prof. Bhanu Walanki, Sports Chairman, IIT Roorkee, said that the Cyclothon and tree plantation drive were organized to sensitize youth and society towards environmental conservation. He emphasized that cycling can substantially reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Initiatives undertaken in collaboration with the Gangey Foundation, he added, help spread the message of environmental protection and sustainable development to a wider audience.
As part of the event, the Gangey Foundation donated more than 100 saplings to the IIT Roorkee campus and conducted a large-scale plantation drive. Addressing the gathering, Girijansh Gopalan, Founder of Gangey Foundation, stressed that young people must take the lead in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. He underscored that environmental conservation is the responsibility of every citizen and that it is essential not only to plant trees but also to ensure their continued protection and care.
During the event, students, faculty members, and staff collectively pledged to adopt environmentally responsible practices, promote clean energy, and embrace greener lifestyles. The World Environment Day celebration at IIT Roorkee emerged as an inspiring example of collective responsibility, community engagement, and public participation in environmental conservation.
