Hundreds of fish found dead in Delhi’s Sanjay Lake amid heatwave and water crisis

Hundreds of fish were found dead at Sanjay Lake in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area as rapidly falling water levels and severe heatwave conditions created an environmental crisis.
The disturbing sight of fish floating in shallow water and dried patches of the lake bed has raised concerns among residents and environmental experts.
According to officials, one of the major reasons behind the situation is the ongoing repair work of a key pipeline that supplies treated water from the Kondli Sewage Treatment Plant to the lake.
The reduced inflow of water, combined with extreme temperatures, reportedly caused oxygen levels in the water to drop significantly.
This created difficult conditions for aquatic life and may have triggered the large-scale fish deaths.
Experts also pointed out that pollution and stagnant water likely worsened the problem.
During heatwave conditions, water bodies can lose dissolved oxygen quickly, while pollutants become more concentrated as water levels decrease. Reports indicate that species including Gambusia fish, tilapia, and carp-like freshwater fish were among those affected.
The incident has once again brought attention to the condition of urban lakes and environmental management in Delhi.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations and review measures to improve water quality and protect ecosystems from future damage.
