Himanta Biswa Sarma announces 18 to 19 ministers in new Assam cabinet before NDA oath

Assam Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that the new BJP-led NDA government in the state is likely to have around 18 to 19 ministers, ahead of its oath-taking ceremony scheduled for May 12.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma clarified that no final list of ministers has been prepared yet and that discussions were still underway.
“As of now, no final list of ministers has been prepared. The decision will be taken late tonight after I hold discussions with our National President J. P. Nadda, who is arriving in Guwahati this evening. Only after consulting him will we finalise the names,” he said.
The BJP-led NDA government in Assam is set to take oath for a third consecutive term on May 12 in the presence of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.
Sarma said the composition of the cabinet—whether it will include new faces or retain experienced ministers—will be decided after consultations with the party leadership.
“There may be around 18–19 ministers, but whether we include new faces or retain experienced ones will depend on the guidance we receive,” he added.
Highlighting the government’s priorities, Sarma said the NDA would continue working steadily for the welfare and development of Assam over the next five years.
“The people of Assam have given us a clear mandate, and after the oath-taking, we will focus on fulfilling our responsibilities. We have five years ahead of us, and we will continue to work steadily and responsibly for the development of the state,” he said.
The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Veterinary College Playground in Guwahati, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending as the chief guest. He is expected to arrive at 10:30 am.
Senior leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with several chief ministers and NDA allies, are also expected to attend the event.
