High-level meeting fuels buzz over BJP shake-up

A four-hour meeting at Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s home on June 15 has set the stage for one of the BJP’s biggest organisational changes in recent years. Rajnath Singh hosted the meeting, which included Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP president Nitin Nabin, senior RSS leaders Arun Kumar and Shiv Prakash, and BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh. The group discussed overhauling the central organisational team, filling pending Governor positions, and other Government-related appointments.
The timing was intentional. The adhik maas period, an extra lunar month considered inauspicious for major changes in Hindu tradition, ended on June 15. The BJP, which often follows cultural and religious customs, usually avoids making important organisational or appointment announcements during this time. Some leaders said formal announcements might wait until Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from the G7 Summit in France on June 19.
“The announcement of significant organisational, gubernatorial, and Government-related changes could happen at any time now that the adhik maas period ended yesterday (June 15). But it is not clear if it will be delayed until PM Modi returns on June 19,” a party insider said.
The meeting took place as the party gets ready for a regular review of its organisational structure. These reviews usually involve changes to national office-bearers, better coordination among state units, and adjustments to key roles in the central leadership.
The presence of two senior RSS leaders in the meeting suggests the changes will focus on grassroots connections, to manage the cadre for the long term, rather than just short-term politics. As organisational general secretary, BL Santhosh is central to any changes in the central team.
In the past, these reviews have often led to the rotation or promotion of national secretaries, joint secretaries, and state coordinators. The main goals are to refresh the middle-level leadership and to prepare for the upcoming State Assembly elections in the next 18 to 24 months.
Gubernatorial appointments are another important topic. Some states have vacancies for Governors or Governors whose terms are ending soon. The Union Government makes these appointments.
Party sources said the meeting was part of regular talks among top leaders to review pending decisions. No specific names or roles were mentioned during the discussions, according to people familiar with the meeting. The BJP has held similar organisational reviews before, often after big elections or at regular times to strengthen the party. These changes usually mean rotating or bringing in leaders at different levels to keep the organisation efficient.
