G7 allies scramble to put Ukraine back atop Trump's agenda as war drags on

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations used the summit in Evian, France, to refocus international attention on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, urging stronger support for Kyiv as the conflict enters its fifth year.
The issue had recently been overshadowed by tensions in West Asia and negotiations surrounding the US-Iran ceasefire agreement. However, US President Donald Trump indicated that his administration would now turn greater attention toward the war in Ukraine following progress on the Iran front.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for discussions focused on military support, sanctions, and Ukraine’s long-term security. According to diplomatic sources, participating nations agreed on the need to maintain pressure on Russia, including targeting its energy sector through additional sanctions.
Leaders also discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and providing further assistance to help protect civilian infrastructure from continued Russian attacks. The discussions came just hours after Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile strike on several Ukrainian cities, resulting in casualties and damage to key infrastructure.
Trump acknowledged frustration over the lack of progress toward ending the war, which he had previously pledged to resolve quickly. He described the conflict as tragic and reiterated his intention to pursue diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a solution.
The United Kingdom announced a fresh package of sanctions targeting Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which is used to transport oil and gas while bypassing existing Western restrictions. The measures are part of broader efforts by Western nations to increase economic pressure on Moscow.
Ukraine’s ongoing push for closer integration with Europe was also highlighted during the summit. The country has formally begun negotiations for European Union membership, a move viewed by Kyiv as crucial for its future security and economic stability.
While discussions on the Middle East and the recent US-Iran agreement remained prominent at the summit, G7 leaders emphasized that support for Ukraine remains a priority. The summit brought together leaders from the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom, along with invited partner nations including India, Brazil, South Korea, and Kenya.
The outcome of the discussions underscored continued international backing for Ukraine amid efforts to sustain pressure on Russia and seek a path toward a lasting resolution of the conflict.
