DMK MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan arrested after court denies bail in Vijay remarks case

DMK MLA and former Tamil Nadu minister Anitha R. Radhakrishnan was arrested on Friday after the Madras High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in a case linked to his alleged remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. Police took the Tiruchendur MLA into custody shortly after the court's order and brought him in for questioning.
The case stems from a speech delivered by Radhakrishnan at a public meeting in Athur on June 20, where he allegedly made objectionable and defamatory comments about Chief Minister Vijay. Following a complaint by a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary, police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Madras High Court declined to grant anticipatory bail, observing that elected representatives must maintain dignity while speaking about constitutional office holders.
The arrest has triggered political reactions across Tamil Nadu, with DMK leaders condemning the police action and party workers staging protests. The incident adds to the growing political tensions between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK in the state.
